"This book is a study of Christianity in the cross-cultural setting of Aotearoa New Zealand between 1814 and 1840. It concentrates on the activities of the Anglican Church Missionary Society (CMS). The CMS was a missionary branch of the Anglican evangelical movement, which in 1814 ventured over 18,000 kilometers from Britain to Aotearoa to find themselves Between God and a hard place. They came to rescue the so called 'heathen' inhabitants from sin, to change their way of life in this world and mark them out for Paradise in the next"--Page xviii.
